“What’s your point?”
In my recent book’s chapter on purpose, I delve into the complex interplay of existence and meaning that each of us navigates. This journey takes on new significance in our world, increasingly filled with uncertainty and turmoil. I often find myself reflecting on lyrics from the song “The Bottom of It” by Fruit Bats: “Doors creaking loud, swinging wide open. And you found yourself, man, and that’s something.” Amidst the chaos and noise, finding oneself is indeed a profound journey. As I wrote, “Why am I here? That question is irrelevant. In fact, knowing the answer will stop you from living.”
The year 2023 unveiled harsh realities many of us might have preferred to ignore. The so-called rules-based world order turned out to be riddled with glaring double standards. It’s both disheartening and sobering, making us question our place and purpose in a world where injustice is rampant. If 2023 taught us anything, it’s the rules based world order has turned out to be one big lie.
My father, Jim, embodied a unique approach to life that has deeply influenced my understanding of purpose. Every day, he woke up as a man on a mission, simply to live his life fully. Well before his diagnosis with a terminal illness, and even after, he lived with a zest that was infectious. Money never drove him, nor did professional accomplishments. He loved being his own boss, running his restaurant not because he wanted to be the boss of it all, but because it gave him control over his destiny. It allowed him to engage in an act he cherished deeply: feeding people. His restaurant was more than a business; it was an extension of his generosity and commitment to a just world. He used his success to be charitable, supporting others whenever he could.
Some people wake up every day, knowing what their purpose is and what they are going to endeavour that day. That’s a beautiful feeling, just like the tranquility and affirmation found in the Fruit Bats song. But most of us don’t. And when we are in the midst of witnessing an unprecedented massacre of innocent civilians before our eyes in Gaza, it’s so easy to feel despondent and ask, “What the hell is the point?” But I implore you, don’t give up. You are here, and you have the right to live your life as you see fit.
My own journey through life’s changing tides has taught me that we are like kites, subject to the whims of the wind. We can’t control these gusts, but we can learn when to hold on and when to let go. The metaphor of the kite on my book’s cover symbolizes this delicate balance. Amidst the turbulence and beauty of 2023, my sense of purpose has been refined, emphasizing the importance of raising good humans. This task has never felt more pressing, as they will shape the future world. “Seeing her devour an ice cream and loving every second of it is my purpose.”
Trauma, both personal and collective, weaves through our lives, impacting our narratives. My journey from adolescence to adulthood has been marked by various trials and tribulations, shaping who I am. But 2023 also brought moments of beauty and achievement. I fulfilled a long-held dream of writing a book, pouring years of thought and experience into its pages. I also witnessed my wife’s business thrive, her entrepreneurial spirit a source of inspiration.
Reflecting on the year’s challenges, I’m reminded of an Instagram post advocating for gratitude amidst adversity. Such challenges fortify our resolve and resilience, making us stronger. As we look toward 2024, I offer my sincerest wishes for health, happiness, and the pursuit of dreams. Health is the foundation for achieving our dreams and aspirations.
This year, embrace your purpose, whatever it might be. It might not be about grand achievements but about finding significance in the small moments. Sometimes it’s in the quiet realizations, like those described in “The Bottom of It,” that we find true meaning. Each step we take toward our individual purpose contributes to a collective future.
As we venture into 2024, I recognize that life is unpredictable, much like the wind that guides a kite. Writing a book wasn’t about instant wealth; it was about sharing a piece of myself. This year might bring a new career, the completion of my next book, or a focus on enjoying existence, teaching my children the values of love, laughter, and goodness. The journey ahead is uncertain, but I’m ready to face it, embracing the changes and challenges that come with each new day. If you’re contemplating your path, remember that you’re not alone. We’re all navigating these uncertain times together, seeking meaning and impact. Let’s move forward with the collective belief that while the destination might be unknown, the journey itself is where we find our purpose.
Thank you for reading and thank you to everyone that supported me this year, I’m deeply grateful.
