One Year
May 23, 2024. The day I launched Unicorn Pony, my marketing company. Of course, it didn’t happen overnight. It was something I had been considering over many months, after launching my book and trying to figure out how to deal with a slew of different predicaments.
But let’s rewind for a moment. All of this started back in junior high. Maybe grade 9. My science teacher, Mr. S, wanted a logo for his homemade furniture business. I’m not entirely sure how it came to pass, but I ended up making one for him: Crooked Creek Creations. The words were spelled out with a typeface styled in the shape of logs, and the Cs were a zigzag connected like a creek in blue. It was marvellous.
It was only possible because my dad had bought me my first laptop, an HP. I’ve always loved design, and (most people know this) I love business. I’ve been self-employed most of my adult life.
Over the years, whether it was in the restaurant world or the automotive space, one thing remained constant, I was always the one designing the branding. Menus, flyers, logos, signage, websites. That instinct never went away. Good branding has always mattered to me.
Fast forward to May 23, 2024. After months of planning, brainstorming names, refining a vision, and putting the pieces together, Unicorn Pony was born from what originally was Mathew Jammaz Business Consulting.
One of my favourite sayings is a Mexican proverb. From all places, I got it from Narcos Mexico. A character said his mom used to tell him, “If you ask God to move a mountain, expect to wake up next to a shovel.”
My shovels came in the form of a dear friend, my cousin, my brother in law, my mom, my wife, and a few others. Over the past year, without them, none of this would’ve happened. Whether through investment or support, I was able to dig. Able to dig this business out of my being and plant it into the world. For anyone who knows they have it in them to pursue what they believe they want for themselves, don’t lose faith. Yes, you can. You just have to be willing to dig.
Thank you to my amazing clients over the last year. I appreciate your patronage and trust. Being part of their story is an honour that is not lost on me.
And, thanks Bayee, for buying me my first computer. (He also bought me my second many years later when I told him I wanted to write a book. Although it wasn’t on that computer, I did write that book, for him).
With gratitude,
Mathew
